Sharing & Encouraging Creativity
Les Cayes, Haiti 2016
I spent 3 weeks this summer, 2016, in Les Cayes, Haiti, helping Catherine Roux with a village feeding program and an enrichment program for street boys.
It was an unexpected invitation which turned into such a wonderful time of sharing and connection.
I had the inspiration to create “Trash to Treasure” sustainable projects for the street boys.
They learned how to turn discarded soda bottles into strong cord/rope.
They learned how to crochet with a variety of “thread” such as discarded clothing, t-shirts, inexpensive dyed string.
With a simple chain stitch and a single crochet stitch, they learned to crochet rugs and tote bags.
They also had the opportunity to experience mixed-media with paint and collage.
I introduced the young man who was teaching the boys how to make coconut jewelry, to wire work to add to his jewelry and to teach the boys.
I had the most amazing time and developed some wonderful relationships.
I have many more ideas and dreams to pursue. Will it be in Haiti? We shall see…..
